Revlon Nearly Naked Foundation + Revlon Brilliant Strength Polish

You all know by now what a fan I am of Revlon (and I've converted so many of my friends). Seriously gals, their stuff is amazing and so affordable. The packaging is average at times - but they skimp on this and put everything into their products (unlike some other brands). I know I am often at fault for judging a book by it's cover, but having tried loads of Revlon products over the past few years I can honestly say it is one of my most trusted brands.

Anyhoo, this is their new foundation which I just adore. I never wear foundation, but rather opt for tinted moisturiser - most foundations are just too heavy and look cakey on me so I was really excited to try something that I could wear in the evenings with a little more coverage than a tinted moisturiser - as it's name says, Nearly Naked foundation is Revlon's super-light formula for a fresh, dewy look.

Some have compared this to Chanel's Vital Lumiere - minus the ridiculous price tag! I just love the light texture of this product, it goes on easily and gives that much more coverage than a tinted moisturiser yet doesn't look like you are caked in make up.

The one con to this is the packaging, it is in a glass open bottle - it would be great if it were in a pump, however, this was done to save on packaging costs and spend more on product so we can't really complain :)

Adding to this, I am also really enjoying the new Revlon Brilliant Strength polish formulation  It literally lasts forever and comes in a great selection of colours - my favourite is Inflame. The brush allows for easy painting and the shine keeps really well - great for a pedi as you have to try pretty hard to chip your nails with this stuff on.

Lifesavers of late {winter}

The signs of winter are already starting to show on my skin. Each year I seem to forget how dry it really gets - I don't think my skin could ever handle living in JHB for that exact reason.

Anyway, there are a few products that I have been using for years as well as some new one's that I am really enjoying and end up reaching for day and night in order to keep my skin hydrated, smooth and happy. In between these products I'll also be mentioning a few other beauty things that I am loving, not winter specific but too good not to mention :)

Crabtree and Evelyn Solid Rose Perfume
I am never one for rose scented anything but this stuff is quite honestly the most heavenly thing I ave smelt in a while. I am as in love with this as I am with the rose collection by By Terry (and that is saying A LOT). This little solid perfume that is the newer version of the old classic, Evelyn Rose EDP, and comes in a beautiful pink bag with the actual casing made of a very luxurious casing with a pretty pearl rose on the lid. It retails at R550 and would make any girls day as a present. This has been one of those products that I whjip out at any dinner party of late and make every girl have a sniff :)

Neydharting Moor Intense Body Cream + Kiehls Creme de Corps
I've reviewed this before (see here). This is still my same bottle as a little goes a long way with this stuff. It truly does wonders for wintery skin though, love this especially for my arms and chest. It's a tad special for my entire body, so a lather Kiehls Creme de Corps (my review here) on my legs. Both are great and body creams I certainly will continue using!

Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair
I have only heard rave reviews about this product, yet only bought my first bottle a month ago. Needless to say, I think it's great. I've been using it every evening either on it's own, or under a night cream (depending how tired and dry my skin is). I have had way too many late nights over the past three or so months, and this has kept my skin looking bright and healthy. Such a beautiful product.

Nivea Supreme Touch Cream Shower Gel
Nothing like a creamy shower gel to keep your skin clean and nourished. This new one from Nivea has macadamia nut  and shea oil. I love a good creamy shower gel, it doesn't leave your skin feeling stripped at all. This one smells pretty delicious too.

Shellac Nails
I have been getting Shellac on my nails for about 4 months now. I used to have Gellish every now and again but really don;t like that product for some reason. Shellac is definitely my preference - it stays on amazingly, great colours and keeps it's shine. Having perfectly manicured nails that are chip free is very underrated.

QMS Cleanser
There is NO better cleanser, especially for tired, dry skin. I look forward to rubbing this only my face each evening as I immediately look fresher and less exhausted after using this product. You have probably heard me say it many times before, but for me the single most important thing to get right in your skin care routine is cleansing correctly - QMS definitely does the job properly for me.
Dior Lip Glow
I bought this is Paris. I just adore it. It gives the lips a beautiful light pink glow (similar to Smashbox O Gloss) and makes them look plump and healthy for a good few hours. Also the packaging is just so luxe, but I guess for R350 a pop it better bloody well be amazing!
What are you loving this season?

Filorga Sleep Recover Anti-Fatigue Night Balm

I am such a sucker for products with names like this, I immediately get intrigued about what they are going to do to my skin. Filorga is a product range that I am getting pretty excited about of late, initially I didn't know much about them at all, but after recently finishing my jar of Time Filler (reviewed here), I am suitably impressed. I have been asked to be a judge for the ELLE Beauty awards and the Time Filler got my vote for best moisturiser (alongside QMS 24 Hour).

The latest from them is the Sleep Recover Anti-Fatigue Night Balm which they call 'a good nights sleep in a jar'. We all know that our skin is at it's most absorbant and 'active' while we're sleeping so this product really takes advantage of this with a bunch of super active ingredients. This is what most 'night creams' are about though, so it isn't a new concept in terms of your evening treatment being full of goodness, but the difference here is that this product targets all those skin concerns that stem from too little sleep (very much the case in my life right now). The four main things that are targeted are:

  • Drawn features, dark circles & lack of radiance
  • Congestion and puffiness
  • Fatigue and tension-related lines
  • Uneven skin tone, blemishes and loss of elasticity

I really loved the texture of this balm, it's still got a gel-like formula but is quite a thick texture and absorbs into the skin almost immediately leaving behind a soft, silky feeling. The balm drains glycotoxins and cell waste from the face while you sleep - even if it isn't for very long. The product is also packed with Filogora's popular Complex Poly-Revitalizing NCTF (and its 53 active ingredients), which helps reenergize cells using hyaluronic acid during the night for fresh, revitalized skin in the morning. The pump bottle is also super hygienic and very convenient for travelling.

It currently retails for R785 for 50ml and is available at selected Edgars and Red Square Stores. For stockist information contact: (012) 567-1059.

All-new FashionWeekly from Sunday Times

This past Sunday was the launch of the all-new Sunday Times FashionWeekly (an insert in the paper). For those who already buy the Sunday Times you will know the Lifestyle (my favourite), Travel, Food and Home weekly.

These supplements are pretty much little magazines with all the latest news you could want (except you not paying R40 like your usual glossy). To be honest, I find the info in these supplements more current too, guess that’s just the bonus of it being newspaper rather than a long-lead mag.

There is loads of cool info packed into this supplement from shopping, breaking news and your much needed juicy scoops. There is also a section called ‘The Edit’ which will keep you in the loop of the top trends as well as give you advice on how to wear it showing local examples (us South Africans often need help in this department!)
These are the gorgeous biscuits I got from Sunday Times :)

There is also the beauty section which particularly appealed to me – packed with hot new products and make up looks. You can also link through (via the QR codes) and see how to achieve the specific looks yourself in a ‘how to’ video. Not mad about the QR codes part, but that's just me :)

All rather nice for your weekly fix with a morning coffee, I think! Be sure to check it out.

The brand new ghd Eclipse

I got an invite to the launch of the brand new ghd styler called the Eclipse and it really is rather fabulous. I have owned the original styler since I was 17 and have loved it, but for some reason I got over the straight hair look and became a tad lazy with styling my hair - it's pretty straight as it is so found myself using my old styler less and less.

I got given an Eclipse to try and ever since then have not stopped taking time out to do my hair - it is such a pleasure to use and leaves my hair looking so soft and silky. I still am using and loving the ghd air (reviewed here) which is just incredible, and these two combined make styling your hair so easy (and a fraction of the time than you are normally used to).

I have long, fairly fine hair so can’t put the Eclipse to the test when it comes to Ethnic hair, although I did see this being tested at the launch and it was rather amazing. This was my impression of the styler (for my hair type):

First things first, the stylers revamped look is really slick and feels very solid. The contours are softer and there is a band of silver around the handle – this makes the product look more expensive and stylish.
It is also lighter and much easier to handle that the previous styler.

The on and off button is on the outside and lights up when switched on, flashing until it has reached its optimum temperature for perfect styling (185 C). It makes a chime kind of noise when it is switched on/off and when it is ready to use. The chord is now on a swivel attachment which ensures it not getting twisted – this is a big plus a
s this was the reason my first styler broke.

The plates glided easily through my hair which felt great and I found there was no need for me to re-do sections which made it a lot quicker and, in my mind, less damaging as you apply less heat to the hair. The styler remains at 185C (as mentioned), which is the best temperature for hair to be styled with. The ghd team obviously still recommend using heat protectant products though.

As a small FYI the ghd Heat Protecter has been redone and is WAY better than before – the previous was rather hideous and the new one is completely different; leaving no tangles and smells heavenly!
For those who are prone to styling injuries the new Eclipse will be your saviour as the outer casing remains cool to the touch throughout – this is thanks to the special Aerogel Insulation.

All in all I really am a fan of this styler, I know a few people have mentioned that it’s not that different from the original, however, I have to disagree – it really has impressed me and made me actually enjoy styling my hair all over again. Totally worth it, I think, and definitely the best styler I have used to date!

The Eclipse will be sold at ghd-approved salons for R2899 as of May 2013.

All-New Stila Colour Balm Lipsticks

As some of you may know, I am a huge Stila fan. I worked very closely with the cosmetics company in my London days and just love what they do – the product is of such high quality. You may remember the eye shadow paletteI spoke of (raved about). Since getting this I would say that at least 5 of my friends have gone out and bought it.

The latest product I am trying from this is their all-new Colour Lip Balms (R210). These really are exactly what they say – a full colour balm that really hydrates the lips and feels great to apply. The nice things about these is the pigment in them, meaning one swipe and you are left with really great colour on the lips. They are also really hydrating and creamy making your lips feel plump and hydrated. They also have a hint of peppermint oil in them which soothes and stimulates irritated, dry lips – great for winter!

I was given a choice in which colour options I wanted to try, so opted for Avery (rather boring of me, but love this colour). It looks great during the day, giving a pretty pink sheen while not looking overly ‘glossy’ (not a fan of that look).

I am dying to try other colour options from this line now, as they are so easy to wear and comes in 10 different shades. They are available in selected Woolworths and Truworths stores at the moment, or online here

These three on next on my shopping list:
Shade - Betsey

Shade - Elle

Estee Lauder launch online store in SA

I got treated by the ladies at Estee Lauder a few weeks back – they invited me to spend a voucher on their brand-spanking-new online store. Can you imagine the excitement!?

I think Estee Lauder is one of those brands that we all have firm favourites from - ones that we don’t need to go in-store and try out each time but rather ones that we now know so well – thus buying online only seems obvious. I went for some old favourites as well as some others that had been highly rated that I wanted to try.

I opted for the below:

Sumptuous Extreme Mascara - THE best mascara EVER, and the only one I will always recommend.

Hydra Complete Gel Mask - sleeping with this on twice a week and it truly is divine. It sinks in well and dries quickly which is great for popping on 5 minutes before bedtime. It smells great too. If you battle with dry patches during the winter months I would highly recommend this.

Advanced Night Repair Serum - this doesn;t need much of an intro. It's definiitely one of their best sellers and is worth every bit of the hype. Promise!

Bronze Goddess Soft Duo Bronzer - this was a new one for me and chose it because I had heard rave reviews. It really is the best of the best when it comes to bronzers. It does cost R525 so one would hope so! It really is beautiful, applies really well and gives a lovely colour.

When ordering any of the above it is really simple to select what you are after as well as select the colour options it comes in – it then goes straight into your basket which you can have a look at before checking out. Within a week my delivery arrived (in the prettiest gold Estee box that I will definitely hold onto) and I was treated to some free samples to try; a really nice way of getting to know other products you may have not tried before.

Because I had spent over R750 I got a little toiletry bag with the free samples to try which are also very handy for weekends away! I just think this concept is so handy and something us South Africans should start making more and more use of – you won’t believe the convenience of it! Plus, anything from Estee Lauder will pretty much blow you away and you’ll become a regular before you know it.

Thanks for the spoils, Ladies!

Lipstick notes

Believe it or not, I have a note on my iPhone called 'lipsticks' amd everytime I see/hear/get advised about a great lip colour I add it to my little list. Most of these colours are M.A.C (well all of them at the moment), but that's just becuase I love their lip colours and at any given time I will have about four of them in my handbag (plus another 6 lip products) - it's a joke.

Anyway, given my list is advised by pretty awesome make-up artists, friends and beauty gals - I thought I would share it with you. Now please don't rush out and buy every colour because they definitely won't all look good on you - but it's a start and narrows down the amazing variety of colours that are out there, and maybe it's a case of going a shade up or down to suit your skin tone.

My top few go like this at the moment (they are mainly from MAC as I really like their lip colours and with their returns deal I seem to accumulate quite a few of theirs). These pics aren't going to give a true reflection of the colours so be sure to try them in-store where possible:

M.A.C Impassioned - this colour is right on the money when it comes to hot pink lips. A must-have for all.

NARS Velvet Gloss Lip Pencil in Dragon Girl - if you ever get the chance to browse a NARS counter then treat yourself to one of these. Really pigmented and don't budge when they on the lips.

M.A.C Russian Red - their famous matte red that really is just beautiful, classic and the cherry on the top to any outfit. This is an old favourite of mine.

Revlon Just Bitten in Precious - I wear this all the time, it looks amazing on the lips and gives a pretty sheen on the lips. Perfect for day-to-day wear and also great when you wearing minimal make-up (I normally find full on lipstick too harsh when I just have tinted moisturizer on).
Left is Precious. Also love the other two.

M.A.C Faerie Glen - got this ages ago and am on my third one, but think it's been discontinued as not seen it for a while - let me know if you find it! Perfect day colour.

Topshop Lipstick in Mexican Wave - I can finally include TopShop products on this blog as you can now get them here (Cape Town store launch is tonight - I will let you know how that goes). These lipsticks are cheap and great. Love this coral, very bold!

M.A.C Marange - What a cool colour and especially great for summer. Really compliments tanned, summer skin. Looking at the colour makes me happy - pathetic, I know, but so many summer memories.

Any others to recommend?

Issey Miyake: L’Eau d’Issey Absolue

Brand new from Issey Miyake is the L’Eau d’Issey Absolue and I am completely and utterly in love with it. This is a strange one, as initially I wasn’t blown away, but on wearing it I get constant compliments and the scent just makes me feel really elegant and feminine.

I think the below image pretty much sums up this scent – warm, inviting and comforting yet elegant, classy and understated. I really don’t have enough good things to say about this one!

The notes in this fragrance say it all with a woody amber composition that includes the following: osmanthus and lotus in the top; jasmine and lily in the heart and white cedar and amber in the base.

The only way I can really describe this scent is that it doesn’t smell cheap – which is quite rare as I so often find floral scents smell cheap and over-powering – this is the kind of scent I would imagine myself using as my signature scent, alongside something like Elie Saab. Definitely a firm favourite, do yourself a favour and spritz it on in-store - I guarentee you that you will be back to purchase it by the end of the day :)

This beautiful fragrance is in store now. 25ml – R645, 50ml – R1055 and 90ml – R1195 – I will definitely be repurchasing this!

Introducing Narciso Rodriguez L'eau

Can you believe that I’ve never actually owned a Narciso Rodriguez fragrance?! My Mum and my best friend both wear the original one, so it’s always been a favourite, but one that I’ve not worn because it was their signature scent.

Everything about these fragrances says ‘feminine and romance’ to me – from the beautiful milky glass bottles, the simplicity, the soft colours and of course the beautiful notes that are used which I will chat about in a bit. The good news for me was that there is a new Narciso Rodriguez scent that has just hit the shelves – so one that I can now wear!

For those of you who haven’t smelt the original Narciso Rodriguez For Her it really is quite a statement scent and one that seems to be a lot of girls favourite. It definitely isn’t going to be that scent that would go unnoticed.

However, for those of you that find this scent too heavy – or even for the girls who already wear the original and possibly find it too heavy going for day use, then their latest launch is for you: it’s Narciso Rodriguez L’Eau for Her and I think you’re going to love it!

I love what has been done with this scent as it isn’t that far removed from the original that we all know and love – it’s this same scent with some new additions that soften the fragrance making it a lot more wearable, playful and youthful in my opinion.

The fragrance is made up of jasmine, cyclamen and sparkling pink peony, with rose, amber and frozen lily of the valley. The base includes musk and chypre accords of patchouli – you can only imagine how incredible this smell!

In Edgars and Red Square stores now. 30ml – R515, 50ml – R730 and 100ml – R1050.

Kiss, Blush and Tell + Gucci Westman

Kiss, Blush and Tell was offered the AMAZING opportunity of interviewing the famous Gucci Westman, an American make-up artist who is affiliated with Revlon. She has worked on the likes of Natalie Portman, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jessica Alba and Halle Berry to name a few.

I made my questions quite personal and also got some insider tips from one of the worlds most renowned make-up artists. I also got the chance to give my opinion on a few of Gucci's favourite products which I have incorporated into the post.

Enjoy!

Question: How did you land up in make-up and what is it about it, that you love?
I ended up in make-up because I wanted to paint, but I was a better painter of faces than paper and I loved people. I love the unexpectedness of everyday; it’s hard to get bored. You know, just the fact that you have to challenge yourself to do something  new and surprising. And I love making women feel beautiful.

Question: If we were to have a sneak peek inside your handbag what would be find in there? (Not only beauty-everything from car keys, phone, etc, etc.)
In my handbag you would find:  an Organic Avenue Dragon’s Breath shot (this is an organic juice café in New York City),  my Pop Phone handheld,  some dehydrated organic raw almonds and Golden Berries. As far as make-up, I have my Coloburst lip Butter in Sugar Frosting and Grow Luscious Mascara.  Oh and I can’t forget my Hermes wallet, Oliver People’s reading glasses and an Odile hair pin.

My review: ColorBurst Lip Butter in Sugar Frosting):
This is an old favourite of mine and constantly in my handbag. It is such a pretty pink and looks amazing with bronzed, fresh skin. These lip butters are so hydrating and 'buttery' (for lack of a better word). Really love the way this looks!

Question: What would you say the most common mistake is that woman make when doing their make up?
I don’t like a really overdone look with make-up. Make-up is meant to enhance your looks, not cover it up and make you someone entirely different! You should be recognizable as you with or without make-up!

Question: If you could pick 5 essential items for a make-up bag, what would they be?
My Revlon Baby Sticks for Lips and Cheeks, a fabulous palette like ColorStay 16H Eye Shadow in Sea Mist,  Nearly Naked Powder and PhotoReady Concealer.

My review: PhotoReady Concealer
I am sure you have seen me rambling on about this for ages, but I can honestly say I have found a concealer that actually works for me - no creasing and great coverage - I am talking better than my Bobbi Brown concealer, better than my MAC concealer and better than my YSL Touch Eclat - big claims, I know, but I truly love this. I have been applying it with my Estee Lauder concealer brush and it just looks great on the skin.
My review: Nearly Naked powder and foundation
In this case I can speak for both of these products (even though Gucci only mentioned the powder). These are both new from Revlon and have been highly anticipated! I have to say that they definitely do live up to their hype - the foundation is dewy and light on the skin but also conceals well. The colour range is really great too with no pinky/chalky undertones. The Nearly Naked powder is a very nice setting powder! The texture is smooth and buttery, and gives a really flawless finish to the face. The only small complaint I have is the packaging - the foundation is in a nice glass bottle but has no pump so feels quite clumsy to use.

Question: I've been lucky enough to have a brief look at the Shanghai collection that's launching in Feb. What was the inspiration behind this and are there any favourites in the range?
I was inspired by the power of the Chinese woman. The contrast of her femininity and power. My favourite is of course the multi-use palette and Super Lustre Lipstick in Red Lacquer – which looks good on everyone!

My review: Super Lustre Lipstick in Red Lacquer
Nothing like a good red that wears well! This colour really is your ultimate red and it is full of hydration and pigment. It really is your statement lipstick that looks great worn with a natural look - in my opinion it is best to keep the rest of your look very understated and natural with defined brows!

Thing I love...

So I have just finished working in an ad agency which has been stressful and sad at the same time. As of today I started at Woolworths - I won't be talking finer details on this blog (as I never really do), but I really am excited about the move - as you know, it definitely won't make me biased towards any brands as this blog has, and will always be run completely separately to my day job. This big move kind of explains why I have been such a slack blogger of late. Please bear with me, I will be back to normal when I find my feet :)

These are a few things that I am loving of late...

Equinox Spa

I went for a massage at Equinox Spa a few weeks back. I hadn't actually been before (it's in the Cape Royale Hotel in Green Point). The massage I went for was part of their Valentines special - a soy candle massage. I actually can't put into words how incredible this massage was - my therapist, Vanelwa, had incredibly firm, strong hands which, combined with the comforting, warm candle wax, was amazing for tired, stressed muscles!
The Romantic Package is still available at the spa and definitely something I would recommend - the package is 120 minutes and costs R1600 (for a couple). It is a treatment done in a double room and includes the massage I mentioned above (soy candle massage), and invigorating scalp massage and a hot stone foot massage plus some fruit and bubbly. You can contact them here.
Excuse the bathroom shot, but this just goes to show the level of luxury at this spa. Such a treat!

Bobbi Brown Advanced Brightening Serum
I used to use the older version of this product and recently got sent the brand new Bobbi Brown Advanced Brightening Serum. I am absolutely loving this product and it has been my go-to treatment every evening as it leaves my skin looking radiant and fresh the next day. The main ingredients are a combo of Whey Protein and SuperCitrus Complex- a brightening mix of vitamin C, citrus unshiu peel extract, grapefruit and lime extract which all help with dull, tired looking skin.
Cleanser - R410, Moisturiser - R690, Serum - R790

Adding to this, I am also really enjoying using my Pot Rouge from the Pretty Powerful range. 100% of the proceeds go towards organizations that empower women and girls with the confidence and resources to be their best. The colour is great and prefect for an understated summer lip.

Pretty Powerful Pink - R340
Giorgio Armani's Acqua for Life EDT
This is a rather amazing initiave too (and a great fragrance, of course). The campaign is in around raising funds for clean drinking water in areas that most need it. So for every purchase of this fragrance (or the men's version) 100 litres will be donated - all you need to do is register your purchase on the Facebook page.
R1039. Image source
With regards to the actual scent, the top notes are amalfi lemon, pink pepper and mint; middle note is jasmine; base notes are virginia cedar, cashmeran and sugar. It last pretty well and a really nice, easy-wearing day fragrance  I have been reaching for it pretty much most mornings!

REN Keep Young & Beautiful Ant-Aging Eye Cream
Ah, I love the name of this product :) This wonder product does everything that you could wish for when it comes to tired eyes that need some TLC. It firms, hydrates, brightens, soothes and replenishes.
It comes it a pump bottle and a little goes a long way. The secret ingredient is an advanced peptide complex called Hexapeptide-11 that's claim to fame is that it combats wrinkles and expression lines. Other active ingredients include plant collagen and ceramides which help to repair & protect the eye area, while restoring moisture levels in the skin around this area (which is renowned for being delicate and fragile. Because of this exact reason it really is well worth your money spending on a product like this.
R549, available at Woolies, Edgars and Stuttafords
Elie Saab Purse Spray
Last, but not least I had to share this gorgeous Purse Spray from my all-time favourite fragrance, Elie Saab. This purse spray is the most gorgous design and fits perfectly in your going out clutch. It comes in both the EDP and EDT and you get three 20ml bottles in each set with refills available too.
ELIE SAAB Le Parfum – EAU DE PARFUM
Eau de Parfum Refillable Purse Spray 3 x 20ml: R 1 060
